David O. Russell’s THREE KINGS

Three Kings is a Gulf War action-comedy which pretty much set the pattern for George Clooney‘s career over the next two decades. It takes a commercial premise and skews it as an off-beat and political bender. Hard to believe that this was first offered to Clint Eastwood and Nicolas Cage.

Written and directed by David O. Russell, Three Kings follows four soldiers (Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, Spike Jonze) who set out to steal gold that was stolen from Kuwait. Things get complicated.

Speaking of complicated…the shoot for Three Kings was filled with tension. Clooney and Russell failed to see eye-to-eye and at one point the pair came to blows about how the director was treating an extra.

Budgeted at $40 million, Three Kings grossed $60 million at the US box office and $107 million globally.

Here’s the official synopsis:

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube star in Three Kings, the story of a small band of American soldiers in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War who seek adventure and fortune in attempting to steal a huge cache of gold hidden somewhere in the desert. Along the way, they are confronted by heroic challenges and newfound discoveries that take them to places they could never have imagined.
