Popular Film: The Death Of The Oscars

To paraphrase George Lucas’ Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith: “So this is how movies die, with thunderous applause”.

Achievement In Popular Film – that’s the new category for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka The Oscars). This is just a way of popularising an awards ceremony which sees its ratings drop year on year. It’s is a sell out. A masterpiece like Birdman ($103 million global gross) means nothing to general audiences (or TV viewers). Throw in a $1 billion grosser like Black Panther and suddenly the masses take notice. The word ‘arts’ no longer means anything to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

How will they judge this category? Box office? Public opinion? I don’t know – but the Oscars are now dead to me.
