We’ll be seeing the mighty Mel Gibson back on the big screen, as the action icon has signed to star in Blood Father. The film, pitched as a Taken-style actioner will be helmed by Mesrine director Jean-Francois Richet.
Written by The Town writer Peter Craig ‘it’s about an ex-con who reunites with his estranged wayward 16-year old daughter to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her’. The film has been fast-tracked for a May start by Why Not Productions and Chris Briggs.
Nobody does pissed-off, ‘you fucked with my family’ style action thrillers like Gibson. Liam Neeson has muscled in on this genre in recent years but Neeson is no Mel Gibson. Just check out Lethal Weapon, Ransom, The Patriot, Edge Of Darkness and Braveheart. Gibson has it in the eyes – the passion and the edge. Neeson lumbers though his thrillers dispensing blows with little interest (except maybe in his salary), while Gibson has always made sure there’s an emotional core behind his onscreen revenge.
Blood Father is currently without US distribution, but let’s hope that changes soon as the film begins shooting in New Mexico.
Gibson will next be seen in The Expendables 3.
