Movies In Focus hasn’t written anything about Bryan Singer’s Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody because the film has been off and on more times than a frequent flyer’s luggage.
Rami Malek is playing the Queen frontman in the pic, which has been shooting for the last few months in London. However, now comes the curious news that “Twentieth Century Fox Film has temporarily halted production on Bohemian Rhapsody due to the unexpected unavailability of Bryan Singer.” This was followed by a quote to the BBC from Singer’s representative which said: “This is a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family. Bryan hopes to get back to work on the film soon after the holidays.”
The Hollywood Reporter has sources stating Singer has been missing from set since the Thanksgiving holidays and that producers have been talking about replacing him. Add to this reports that he was regularly late to set and once didn’t show at all, with a day’s shoot having to be directed by the film’s cinematographer, and this seems like a major issue of a director dropping the ball during production.
There have been many rumours about Singer’s personal life bubbling for the last couple of month (which I won’t get into here – Google it!) and it’s very possible this has something to do with his absence.
Singer could be back at the helm in a few weeks – or he could be replaced by another director for the remainder of the shoot and post-production. This would have major implications for the film’s projected December 2018 release date and the it’s ultimate success. Not to mention Bryan Singer’s career.
Time will tell how this pans out – but the signs aren’t good.
